fkr's OpenDarwin weblog archive

the archive of my webblog. inded, I need to be more verbose.

I built binaries from the latest X.org release 6.8.1 for the use with OpenDarwin. The checksums for these files can be found in the README.

On my train ride to a customers site yesterday, I updated Rob Braun's SACK for OS X patch to work with Darwin 7. It seems to work fine (at least from my observations, but I'd be happy if others would test it as well.

I started hacking on systrace for Mac OS X again (see the archive of my blog for earlier adventures with systrace), after Sam Hart asked me a few questions about it. I'll upload a port of the userland for it tomorrow or saturday. Until I get the x86 more working, I'll just provide a ppc kernel.

  • mach_kernel built from xnu-517.7.21 with /dev/systrace

While fiddling with xnu, I updated the Building XNU Howto to be in sync with Darwin 7. I wanted to do that for quiet a while :). Next item on my todo-list is the networking howto.

X.org has released their newers version and here are the binaries for OpenDarwin:

rozinante has finished compiling the X.org release candidate.

As Torrey pointed out on the hackers-Mailinglist, X.org has a release candidate out. I went ahead and built it for OpenDarwin. For now, I only have ppc binaries built, rozinante is currently building the x86 ones.

I also have a RPM that fixes a bug in traceroute that was pointed out on the darwin-development-list. The patch I applied can be found here.

The last weekend, I spend at O'Reilly's eurofoo camp. It was an amazing weekend. I had the chance to talk to a lot of very smart people at the foo camp. Also I started planning the 7.5.1 release. See this mail to the hackers list. The TodoList wiki holds a lot of things, that I want to see being taken care of for 7.5.1.

The discussion with our developers about a roadmap and possible roadmap items resulted in a big update to our new TodoList wiki. Lot's of interesting projects there :)

The tree has been tagged with OD_RELEASE_7_2_1, means, the release will happen tomorrow. Quiet exciting. :)
I've been working behind the scenes with some of the other developers to put together a road-map for the OpenDarwin releases and the project. We will share it soon. With the release being that close, I can start working on new stuff again. I'm very sure that the next release 7.4.1 will contain a few nice suprises.

I've cut a first, very first release of my ODWireless work. This is not nearly complete, but Chuck asked to release something as soon as possible, so that others can take looks at it. Here you go: ODWireless-1.tar.gz
Of course, there are RPMS/xars for coyote as well:

Some information on this driver being run on coyote can be viewed in this textfile: ODWireless.txt

So, WWDC is over. It was an awesome week. I've met a lot of people, it was especially cool to see Will again (I've already known him from our visit to Linuxdays Luxembourg). It is always nice to meet the people "behind the e-mail addresses". Chuck and I discussed a lot of things regarding OpenDarwin. He has lots of cool ideas for stuff to work on (more in his blog).
Be sure to check this directory for the 7.2.1 Release Candidates:

Coyote looks promising, I'm currently working on getting a first release candidate out. See my mails to hackers for details. I'm now part of the OpenDarwin core team.
Since yesterday I'm in San Francisco, if you feel like meeting with me, drop me a private mail.

Hacked mostly on our cd creation script, buildcd.sh. It was initially written for the 6.x releases by Shantonu. After Chuck did some groundwork the other day, I saw the need to make it complete and make it a bit more flexiable. Now that I can easily create the isos again, the debugging of the install cd should become even easier.

Worked mostly on xnu. Basically merging changes from import and removing stale files from the cvs. As some people already noticed, the tarball of xnu-517.3.7 has some issues, I've made a patch to make it compile (meanwhile Kevin updated the tarball at Apple and incorprated the diff). h. For the curious, there are a few "convenience" patches in the xnu directory as well:
